Directions: West

In the Northern Hemisphere Winter is cold. The colour of North is Blue. The traditional animals representing North include white buffalo, moose, and bear. they are regal yet show patience to all the seasons of which North, Winter, is one.

The shaman know which direction is West. In the modern world we look at a compass, with North at the top and south at the bottom, across the middle, the two cardinal directions West and East spell the word “WE.”

West is the sense of humanity, humanity combined with all the living things around us, with Mothe Ghia. With our inner spirit and the guides that came with us into this physical world.

West includes our family and animals; they travel our path with us for a little while and teach us about independence and unconditional love. The Shaman looked at the West where the sun sets as the essential transition between the day of activity to the night of the spiritual world. As the light faded into darkness, the Shaman would lead the community in ceremonies to mark the events of the day, of the month, of the season.

West speaks to the Fall and harvesting of physical crops as well as spiritual growth. The physical crops we plant feed us they maintain us and help us thrive. West speaks to the harvesting of spiritual growth as we face and resolve challenges of life.

West is about the success and rewards we experience as a result of facing and learning from challenges. Challenges, rewards, and success are all part of our movement of spirit and growth, the essential transition from ignorance to knowledge and wisdom.

Moving from ignorance to knowledge and wisdom also speaks to purging what no longer supports and helps you grow, learn and thrive. West brings with it the message of purging and moving on. What no longer serves you must go. This could be a position at work where there is no chance for advancement or problems cannot, or will not be addressed that restrict or contain you. A relationship that no longer helps you grow and evolve must change and possibly, it may need to end.

West is the harvest of what you planted the day, month, or years before. It is the certificate and recognition for effort and sacrifice before the night of rest and recouperation, of healing before the dawn that is the East and the planting of new opportunities. Know that with the East and the next dawn you will wake up to new possibilities.
