Directions: North
In the Northern Hemisphere Winter is cold. The colour of North is Blue. The traditional animals representing North include white buffalo, moose, and bear. they are regal yet show patience to all the seasons of which North, Winter, is one.
The shaman knows which direction is North, the North star guides his or her eyes and his mind as he navigates his community through Winter.
Winter is a time between.
Between the ending of the old year and its final harvest and the expectancy of the new year that has not been born. We must endure the challenges of waiting and surviving and as we do so, we honour the ritual of the Winter solstice.
From the winter solstice, we look backward and forward at the same time.
In the North star is the spirit of the night. The spirit of night is not darkness or blackness. The North Star is bright, brighter than other stars in the sky. It is a beacon.
The stars in the heavens are bright and guide us as we travel. The moon shines down on us with reflected sunlight through different stages of its journey across the sky each month of winter.
North is the spirit of Winter. We may think of Winter as being cold and inhospitable. But it is a necessary rest between the year and growth that has past and the year of expectation and manifestation to come.
North represents the spirits of our Ancestors.
The spirits of our Ancestors is not ancestor worship. We are honouring our Ancestors and their achievements, the greatest of achievement was the gift of life. If they did not help us, our family exist, they could not be our ancestors. They passed memories, habits, experiences, knowledge, love, and tradition down to us.
Traditions of service in the military, as healers, as husbands and wives, or a sense of exploration and inquisitiveness if one or more Ancestor was involved in exploration in an earlier time when the world was still impossibly big.
Ask for help from your ancestors during winter, when the world rests, that is the best time to pose the question.
